INTRODUCTION

The Department of Social work began in Don Bosco College, Itanagar was established in the year 2018. The college is the first in the entire state to offer Bachelor of social work under  Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU). Twenty (20) students were enrolled for the Honours programme in the year 2018 for the first batch  and Mr. Francis Hasdak and Mr Telesphore Topno are the first Assistant professor of the department.

 

Inspection by Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) for introducing Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) at Don Bosco College was held on 26th April 2018. The inspection team was led by Dr. David Pertin Joint Registrar Academics and Conference and Liaison Officer, Rajiv Gandhi university, Doimukh. Approval for starting BSW at Don Bosco college for the Academic year 2018 was given on 13th June 2018 by RGU.

 

The Department of Social work aims at grooming young minds into confident, competent and passionate harbingers of positive change at Individual, Community and at the larger Societal Levels. It is achieved through an educative process  which focuses on the transformation of the person through combination of inputs, personalized  interactions and guided engagement with and reflection upon existential realities.

The departments’ motto “ EDUCATE,  ENGAGE,  EMPOWER ”, informs and invigorates all spheres of its educational and intervention programmes. It invites all who are associated with the Institute to a deep, consistent and creative engagement with the self and the society.

  • To engage the students develop the theoretical understanding received in the classroom and practice it in the field at the individual, group and community level.
  • To capacitate the students so that they make an impact in the lives of the people especially the underprivileged and disempowered communities in the state of Arunachal Pradesh and the north eastern region.
  • To create the space and the opportunity for the students of Social Work to build on their strengths, deal with their fears, help heal the emotional and psychological wounds that stifle some of them, discover their passion, build their dreams and articulate their aspirations and support in their exploratory ventures.
  •  We do not aim at finished products; we aim at growing, learning and dynamic young social change leaders.

    Best Practices of the Department

    The best practices in department of Social work comprises of workshops, village (Community) adoption.  The Department also proactively responds to the challenges faced by the communities at the time of disasters; both natural and man-made. Workshops in department to Social Work is part and partial of the curriculum.  It is an Add on to their training and education. Through this workshop they are better equipped to go for their fieldwork and contribute substantially in the fieldwork and as well as in the social work practice.

Field work is fundamental to Social Work Education and forms the base for professional development in a student. Learning by doing is the pedagogical approach that is adopted. Field Work training enables the student to integrate theory and practice simultaneously, sequentially and cumulatively inculcating the development of professional competence among them. Field work programme consists of observation visits to the agencies, institutions and community settings, rural camp study tour and  direct practice of social work skills for intervention, under the guidance of professional social  workers in selected placements. Fieldwork thus provides students the opportunity to learn, understand, integrate and apply the different facets of social work practice.
